heralding spring
To welcome the new season with the joys of spring we passed out hundreds of flowers uptown. Busking with a spring in their step, Sean Mulcahy and his crew of the musical group 'Advertisment' performed live while our film crew of four cameramen set out to record the action. We'll show some footage in a short while, when the final polish has been finished. For now enjoy some images. For more coverage visit our Facebook page.
philip thomas construction
We welcome Philip Thomas Cosntruction to my-modern. Philip R. Thomas has been intrumental in shaping Charlotte's residential modern face by building contemporary structures all around the city. eco-friendly kitchen cabinets: italian-style
e3 cabinets, Charlotte's eco-friendly hotspot for cabinetry and storage solutions, showcases its modern, Italian design line Berloni. With Berloni, style meets green. Wood origins are FSC certified, class E0 standards guarantee the lowest formaldehyde content, and performance standards promise a quality product with a long life ahead.
Prepare food, live modern and look sexy all at once. Take a peek at the Berloni line at e3 cabinets.
modern stone veneer
Charles Luck, Charlotte's stone center, carries a line of stone veneer panels perfect for any modern home creation. The line of special order veneers includes ten designs (shown below) available in five types of stone. Each of the designs are also available in three different formats; your choice of graffiti, inlay, or bas relief. The graffiti and bas relief options add texture and dimension to the design, and inlay uses two types of stone to fill the design and leave the surface smooth and level.
blum's servo-drive for aventos
If high-tech kitchens tickle your fancy, then you may be interested in SERVO-DRIVE for AVENTOS, by Blum. This electrical opening support system boosts the user-friendly AVENTOS cabinetry by a mechanical, touch sensitive open and close feature.
Blum explains: "Just a light touch
on the door lifts it open and out of the way.
To close, the user touches an easily accessible wireless switch mounted
inside the cabinet. The door lowers
gently to a silent close with BLUMOTION.
A safety feature incorporated into the system also will stop the door
from closing if it meets any resistance.
Because AVENTOS cabinet doors open upwards, they provide an excellent view into the cabinet interior. This always enables comfortable and ergonomic access to storage items. The kitchen user retains freedom of motion, keeping the cabinet door out of the way."
If you're interest is piqued in Charlotte's own Blum offerings, email my-modern for more info.
international garden in the works
groundworks studio was commissioned to create a new international garden and to transform an existing amphitheater space for the Waddell Language Academy. groundworks studio's design seeks to transform both spaces into dynamic, learning environments, evocative of the countries' languages of origin.
Visitors to the International Garden are greeted by a welcome sign nestled within the American Meadow Garden, with symbolic animals from France, China, Japan and Germany, inspired by Japan's Children's Day celebration. This garden celebrates the beauty of the American landscape with a mosaic of flowering understory trees and swaths of shrubs, wildflowers and ornamental grasses.
Four outdoor rooms are carved out of the courtyard and reflect the languages taught at the school. The tradition of music informed the design of the German Garden with bluestone bars representing the staff in musical notation. Ferns and evergreens evoke the Black Forest. Across from the German Garden is a dragon head with seatwall, inspired by Chinese New Year festivals. The floor takes on a cracked ice patterning, found in traditional Chinese screens. A gravel pathway through a grove of hybrid magnolias connects with the French Garden. A stone bridge draws one into the French garden, an abstraction of Monet's water lilies depicted with a gravel field with bluestone ellipses (water lilies) floating within. A striking gold fleur-de-lis sculpture emerges from the French Garden. A catfish shaped berm rising out of the earth, inspired by the Japanese Earthshaker myth forms an inviting boulder seating area for the Japanese Garden. The character for tree is embedded into the floor and a Japanese maple offers shade. Red circle plantings of Shenandoah switchgrass and red paver circles suggest the rising sun of the Japanese flag.
welcoming newest my-modern member: grün
What grün says:
"Here, we start with an emotion or concept drawn directly from our clients, and we transform it into space. We find the purpose of every element in itself and its relationship to the whole with this concept as a guide."
"For us, architecture is the unique solution to a particular design task with the purpose to serve life. Form-finding is not imposed; form is discovered through the building task."
